Situated on New Haven Harbour in the US state of Connecticut, New Haven is a large city that proudly blends its Colonial heritage with its modern entertainment facilities. Known as the “Cultural Capital of Connecticut”, New Haven offers a wealth of exciting arts, cultural and entertainment venues, including theatre, film and music venues and museums. The city is also famed for being the home of Yale University, which you can explore by starting at the Yale Visitor Centre situated on Elm Street. The Old Campus of Yale University is Yale’s oldest area and dates back to the 18th Century. In the downtown area of New Haven, you can stroll through New Haven Green, a large park and recreation area, commonly used for music festivals and concerts. Nearby you will find a plethora of museums and art galleries, such as the Yale University Art Gallery, the Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Yale Centre for British Art. New Haven also has many historical landmarks to be explored within the city and the outlying area, including the Pardee Morris House and Lighthouse Point Park, a scenic spot on the coast, where you will find the 19th Century Five Mile Point Lighthouse. Just to the south of New Haven, you can also spend time at Fort Hale Park, which provides access to the seaside and views over the New Haven Harbour.
The best way to explore the centre of New Haven is on foot. However to see some of the attractions in the outlying areas, you will need to hop on a bus or hire a car. There is an efficient bus service that runs throughout the central area and intercity buses leave from New Haven’s Union Station, located on Union Avenue. Union Station is the main railway station that connects New Haven to other nearby cities, such as New York City and Boston. Local taxis are also available to hire for journeys within the immediate city area. Alternatively, you could try hiring a bicycle from a local rental store.
Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN) is situated to the southeast of New Haven at a distance of 4.5 miles (7.2 km). The airport provides a full provision of transport options to reach the city. There are major car rental companies located at the airport, if you want to hire your own car. Additionally, you can hire a taxi from outside the terminal building. Bus services also provide transportation from the airport to New Haven.
